Most PMP preparation stops at the pass screen. The certification does not. On the day you pass, a three-year maintenance cycle starts, and it has its own set of requirements that are easy to ignore for two and a half years and then unpleasant to fix in the last month.
This guide covers what PMI requires to keep the credential active, based on PMI's certification maintenance pages and the Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) Handbook.
The cycle starts the day you pass
PMI's CCR Handbook is direct about this: the day you pass the exam, your CCR cycle begins and lasts for a three-year period.
Two consequences follow, and both catch people out.
First, activities you completed before you earned the certification are not eligible as PDUs. The courses you took to reach the 35 contact hours, the reading you did during preparation, the webinars you sat through while studying — none of that counts toward renewal. Your PDU balance starts at zero on pass day.
Second, the clock does not wait for you to think about it. Nothing prompts you in year one. The requirement is the same whether you start earning PDUs in month one or month thirty.
What 60 PDUs actually means
A PDU is a professional development unit, and the headline number for PMP holders is 60 PDUs in a three-year cycle. But the 60 is not a single pool. It is split, and the split has minimums inside it.
| Requirement | Amount |
|---|---|
| Total PDUs per cycle | 60 |
| Minimum Education PDUs | 35 |
| Maximum Giving Back PDUs | 25 |
| Minimum per Talent Triangle area (Education) | 8 |
| Remaining Education PDUs, any area | 11 |
Read that table carefully, because two of those rows are constraints rather than targets.
The 25 for Giving Back is a maximum, not a goal. You cannot renew on volunteering and mentoring alone. At least 35 of your 60 must come from Education.
The 8 per Talent Triangle area is a floor that applies inside the Education half. PMI's three Talent Triangle areas are Ways of Working, Power Skills, and Business Acumen. You need at least 8 Education PDUs in each of the three, which accounts for 24 of the 35; the remaining 11 Education PDUs can sit in any area.
The practical effect is that you cannot renew by doing more of the one thing you enjoy. Someone who spends three years on agile delivery training will clear Ways of Working easily and may arrive at renewal short on Business Acumen.
How PMI defines the three areas
PMI describes the Talent Triangle areas roughly as follows.
- Ways of Working covers delivery approaches — predictive, agile, design thinking, and practices still emerging — and knowing which technique fits which situation.
- Power Skills covers collaborative leadership, communication, an innovative mindset, for-purpose orientation, and empathy.
- Business Acumen covers understanding the macro and micro influences in your organization and industry, and aligning project work with organizational strategy.
There is a useful overlap with exam preparation here. The PMP exam updated in July 2026 raised the Business Environment domain from 8% to 26% of the exam, and PMI describes the updated exam as focused on outcomes, value, and business impact. The exam domain and the Talent Triangle area are not the same thing, but the direction is consistent: the part of the profession that candidates historically treated as background is now weighted heavily on both sides of the credential.
Where PDUs come from
PMI recognizes several categories on each side.
Education
- Courses and educational training
- Global and local events and conferences, including educational sessions
- Online or digital media, self-paced
- Reading relevant to the certification you hold
- Informal learning, meaning structured professional discussions such as mentoring conversations or lunch-and-learn sessions
Giving Back
- Work as a practitioner, meaning working in your certified role
- Creating content such as articles, blogs, webinars, or videos
- Mentoring or teaching others
- Volunteering
Note the cap on the first Giving Back item. For PMP holders, working as a practitioner is worth up to 8 PDUs per cycle. Doing your job is worth something, but it is worth 8 of 60, and only once per cycle's worth of accounting. The remaining Giving Back capacity has to come from the other three categories.
Reading and informal learning are the two categories people underuse. Both are legitimate Education categories, and both fit into a normal working week without a training budget.
Reporting
PDUs are not credited automatically. You enter them in PMI's Continuing Certification Renewal System, the CCRS, or through PMI's official mobile app. The practical advice is to report each activity when it happens rather than reconstructing three years of learning from memory in the final week.
On fees: the CCR Handbook states that renewal fees are subject to membership and regional pricing, and directs certification holders to their my.pmi.org dashboard for the current amount. Because the figure depends on both membership status and region, check it there rather than relying on a number quoted elsewhere.
Rollover, and why the last year matters
If you finish early, some of the surplus carries forward — but only some, and only from a specific window. PDUs earned in the final year of your cycle can roll over to the next cycle, up to a maximum of 20.
That rule shapes timing more than most people realize. PDUs earned in year one above the requirement are simply lost. PDUs earned in year three above the requirement are worth up to 20 toward the next cycle. If you are going to be efficient about this, the efficiency lives at the end of the cycle, not the start.
If you miss the deadline
Missing the requirement does not immediately void the credential. PMI applies a suspension period of one year, during which you can still earn the necessary PDUs and complete the renewal process. What you cannot do during suspension is use the designation — you are not an active PMP while suspended.
If the suspension period expires without renewal, the outcome is more serious. The CCR Handbook states that you must then reapply by completing a new application, submitting the associated fees, and retaking the examination. That is the full path again: application, eligibility documentation, fees, and the exam itself.
Being reinstated from suspension also does not reset your schedule. The handbook notes that the date of your next CCR cycle does not change after you are reinstated to active status.
A reasonable rhythm
Sixty PDUs over three years is twenty a year, which is not a heavy load — it is roughly one activity every two or three weeks. The failure mode is almost never volume. It is either forgetting the cycle exists until year three, or discovering at the end that the PDUs you earned are concentrated in one Talent Triangle area and will not satisfy the minimums.
A simple approach that avoids both:
- Record your cycle end date somewhere you will see it, on the day you pass.
- Log PDUs in CCRS as you earn them, not in batches.
- Once a year, check your balance against the three Talent Triangle minimums rather than against the total.
- Keep Business Acumen deliberate. It is the area most likely to fall short, because it is the least likely to arrive through routine delivery work.
- If you are ahead, save the surplus for the final year, where up to 20 PDUs can roll forward.
The short version
The PMP renews on a three-year cycle that starts the day you pass. You need 60 PDUs: at least 35 Education, no more than 25 Giving Back, and at least 8 Education PDUs in each of Ways of Working, Power Skills, and Business Acumen. Working as a practitioner covers 8 of the total at most. Report as you go in CCRS. Miss the deadline and you get a one-year suspension to fix it; miss that, and you reapply and sit the exam again.
